Article 28 (right to education) Every child has the right to an education. Article 29 (goals of education) Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.

4 Goal 4 – Quality Education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. - Education liberates the intellect - unlocks the imagination and is fundamental for self-respect. - It is the key to prosperity and opens a world of opportunities, making it possible for each of us to contribute to a progressive, healthy society. - Learning benefits every human being and should be available to all.

5 Activity 1: Stand up, Sit down
Listen to the statements that are being read out. Consider whether they are true or false. If you agree that they are true – stand up. If you think they are false – stay sitting down. If you’re not sure – put both of your hands in the air. In pairs/groups – students will be given a plain piece of paper to create a mind map about their feelings to the following questions based on the acitivity. After you have finished the statement rounds you can reflect on the process with the participants. What statement did you dislike? What did you learn from all the statements and the discussions? How would you feel if you were in a situation like those reported by the last statements, or if somebody from your family or friends were? Is there anything that you would like to add to the statements or the discussions? Statements for Step 2 I go to school every day, except weekends, holidays and when I am ill Many of my friends are from school My school doesn’t have running water I know at least one person of my age that doesn’t go to school We have more than one teacher in my school I think school isn’t needed. I don’t need to know how to read or write Statement for Step 3 Enrolment in primary education in developing countries has reached 91 per cent but 57 million children remain out of school (True) In developing, low income countries, every additional year of education can increase a person’s future income by an average of 3% (False – 10%) Approximately 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read (True) 35million primary school aged children are still denied the right to education (False – 67million) In most developing countries, public school is not free. The costs of books, uniforms, and teachers’ salaries are paid for by students’ families – (True)

6 Activity 2 Fill in the table in your booklet, discussing the benefits and barriers to a quality education. Consider: Jobs College, university, further courses etc. Family Health What the barriers might be to receiving quality education What countries/communities do we see the barriers in?
