1 Australia’s largest abalone farmer
100% Australian owned and operated. Founded in Portland nearly 20 years ago. Employer of more than 25 local people. Proudly and sustainably farming an indigenous animal that has been fished to near extinction in Portland Bay. We are still here and we want to grow here.

2 Three day old abalone larvae (Veliger)
The most sensitive receptor in a marine environment are microscopic larvae.  This has been proven time and time again by scientific research.  The Veliger in these recent photos thrive in the water pumped in at the Narrawong farm Yumbah does not pollute the water it is totally dependent on.

3 Flynn Taylor - Production Manager (6th Generation Portland Resident)
I have a degree in Marine Biology, I did an honours project studying dolphins and I am keen recreational diver in the waters off Portland. I am very conscious of the environmental footprint associated with our abalone farming activity. I am proud to be working in a clean industry that grows food in a sustainable manner that utilise my qualifications. The Dutton Way project is great for the town and great for the environment.

4 Taryn Thomas – Administration
I’m a young Mum and I am proud of the company that I have been employed with for six years. This project will add value to local tourism, I regularly receive tourist inquiries about farm tours and door sales. This project will bring more tourists to Portland, aquaculture is a proven drawcard for local and international visitors.

5 Luke Thorpe – Operations Manager
I’ve worked from the bottom up to the Operations Manager. This project offers great opportunities for school leavers to upskill, learn & develop a pathway, that is not available in other industries. I love seeing young people that I employ going through the same journey. The Dutton Way expansion will provide incredible career opportunities for young people in Portland

6 Shane Saunders – Stock Movement Supervisor
I have lived in Portland all my life, I am Kilrarer Gunditjmara. Abalone farming is an extension of what my people have been doing for tens of thousands of years. I started with Yumbah when I was 20 with no qualifications and have worked my way up to supervisor. I live on site, 50 metres away from the pump shed and the only thing I hear at night is the waves. The new project means more opportunities for people like me and an increased connection between the old aquaculture and the new.

7 Ben Menzel – Maintenance Manager
Yumbah is 100% Australian ownes and having spent most of my working life in heavy industry including the Smelter and Glaxo, it is so refreshing to work in a clean environment that doesn’t require ear or respiratory protection. I grew up here and live near the site. As a dad with young children I regularly visit the abalone farm beach, its our family beach, safe and pristine. If there are no jobs, there is no Portland & no future for my family’s life history in the town.
