5. Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius ( AD) was the Roman emperor from 161 to 180, and was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. He is remembered as a military leader, but also as one of the most thoughtful, fair, and wise leaders in history.
He was a practitioner of Stoicism, which promoted the ideas that happiness is found in accepting life as it presents itself, not being controlled by our desire or fear, understanding our role in nature, and treating others in a fair and just manner.
His untitled writing to himself, commonly known as Meditations, is considered by many commentators to be one of the greatest works of philosophy.
