1 AWS DR Strategies Date: 10/06/2017

2 AWS Differentiator #1 Leadership : AWS is the leader in Infrastructure as a Service Gartner Magic Quadrant for 6 years in a row with unmatched Technical and TCO benefits True On-demand flexibility : In the generation of intelligently managing infrastructure, AWS offers on- demand usage, scale up and down as the workload deserves to minimize sunk cost Eliminate guessing future: AWS allows pay per use infrastructure, so cut the risk of under sizing or oversizing your infrastructure and optimize till you stabilize. In future when your infra needs growth, scale up on demand Lower TCO and continuous price drops: AWS helps with inbuilt tools to suggest infra optimization and cost savings, lower your IT expenses with AWS price drops – 58 price cuts till date Ready for next refresh? AWS keeps improving infrastructure thereby helping you to use the latest generation technology as days progress, don’t get held with purchased infrastructure Don’t waste on idling resources : AWS by default offers rich configurable features of auto scaling, auto recovery of instances thereby reducing cost overhead of idling resources for failover Best in Industry SLA: With the leader comes the best in industry uptime SLA, example EC2 instances offering 99.95% uptime, AWS S3 storage offering % durability, Business support with 1 hour CTR for production issues

3 Backup configuration state and data Store Backups in Amazon S3
AWS Disaster Recovery High Availability Backup Disaster Recovery Keep your applications running 24x7 Make sure your data is safe Get your applications and data back after a major disaster Backup configuration state and data Store Backups in Amazon S3 Archive in Glacier

4 Start Here: Business Continuity Requirements
RPO RTO Transactions Lost Down time Recovery Point Objective (RPO) Recovery Time Objective (RTO) How much data loss can be tolerated? Zero data loss? 15 minutes out of date? How quickly I need this service to be recovered 1 minute? 15 minutes? 1 hour? 4 hours? 1 day? RPO is the maximum targeted period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. RTO is a targeted duration in which a business process must be restored after a disaster or disruption. High Availability is a DR where RTO and RPO are equal to Zero. If it harms critical business processes, it may be a disaster Time-based definition – how long can the business stand the pain? Think about the Probability of occurrence Fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, volcanoes Plane crashes, vandalism, terrorism, riots, sabotage, loss of personnel, etc. Anything that diminishes or destroys normal data processing capabilities

5 AWS offers four levels of DR support across a spectrum of complexity and time
Backup & Restore Warm standby in AWS Hot standby (with multi-site) Pilot light RPO/RTO: Hours RPO/RTO: Minutes RPO/RTO: Seconds RPO/RTO: Real-time Low High Lower priority use cases Solutions: S3, Elastic Block Store Cost: $ Meeting lower RTO & RPO requirements Core services Scale AWS resources in response to a DR event Cost: $$ Solutions that require RTO & RPO in minutes Business critical services Cost: $$$ Auto-failover of your environment in AWS Cost: $$$$ Applications can be placed on a spectrum of complexity… Business continuity ensures that critical business functions continue to operate or recover quickly despite serious disasters. Disaster recovery (DR) is how you get there. DR enables the recovery or continuation of tech infrastructure and systems following a disaster.

6 Disaster Recovery: On Premises versus AWS Cloud
CAPEX of building backup data centers Unnecessary OPEX of storage, archival and retrieval tools Testing and recovery without week- long off-site drills Reliant on aging technology: tape Low upfront CAPEX without building or leasing multiple data centers Pay only for services used Remotely test any time from anywhere Improve your security posture in the cloud Regionally diverse with multiple AZs Scalable and automated DR planning Single DR level across organization on premises Separate levels of DR per application or business unit – with AWS

7 Cloud-based disaster recovery services that enable rapid recovery of your IT infrastructure and data
Fast Performance Elasticity Fast disk-based storage and retrieval of files. Add any amount of data, quickly. Easily expire and delete without handling media. No Tape Secure Eliminate costs associated with transporting, storing, and retrieving tape media and associated tape backup software. Secure and durable cloud disaster recovery platform with industry-recognized certifications and audits. Compliance Partners Fast retrieval of files allows you to avoid fines for missing compliance deadlines. AWS solution provider and system integration partners to help with your deployment. Cost Savings Consolidate DR data center sites to slash DR budgets by up to 50% and reduce hardware footprints by up to 30%. Only pay for storage and computing resources used in recovery scenarios. Elasticity Add any amount of data, quickly. Easily expire and delete without handling tape. Performance Take advantage of fast disk-based storage and file retrieval without the costs associated with transporting, storing or retrieving tape media in off-site facilities. Amazon S3 and Glacier storage services used for backups offer % durability for objects stored in them. Secure Utilize Amazon’s industry-recognized cloud security certifications and ensure security with our flexible access control and encryption tools for data in transit and at-rest. Scalable Scale instantly in the AWS cloud with pre-configured resources (AMIs). Add any amount of data quickly, test any time Compliance Stay compliant in the cloud without building new data centers or relying on slow file retrieval systems that impact compliance audit deadlines and result in fines. 8 Increasing your Security Posture in the Cloud
People & Process System Network Physical AWS security approach Size of AWS security team Visibility into usage & resources

9 AWS Cloud Compliance Accreditations & Certifications
Helping customers understand the robust controls in place at AWS to maintain security and data protection in the cloud Accreditations & Certifications

10 Pilot Light Architecture
Build resources around replicated dataset Scale AWS resources in response to a DR event Keep ‘pilot light’ on by replicating core databases Build AWS resources around dataset and leave in stopped state Start up pool of resources in AWS when events dictate Match required production capacity through auto-scaling policies Cut over to the system in AWS
