Presentation on theme: "Atomic Structure Protons- positively charged, found in nucleus"— Presentation transcript:

1 Atomic Structure Protons- positively charged, found in nucleus
Neutrons- neutral, found in nucleus Electrons- negatively charged, found in electron cloud, In a neutral atom equal to the number of protons Subatomic particles- smaller particles that make up an atom

2 Isotopes Different atoms of a specific element can have different numbers of neutrons Ex Hydrogen atom has 1 proton, but can have 0, 1, or 2 neutrons

3 Ions 1 proton – 2 electrons = -1 charge
An atom with a positive or negative charge An atom with a different number of electrons then protons Gaining or losing electrons in order to increase stability (octet rule) Charge is equal to protons-electrons 1 proton – 2 electrons = -1 charge

4 Diagram of an Atom (Bohr Model)
Electron cloud Neutron Electron Proton Nucleus

5 Guidelines 5th energy level holds 50 electrons
Protons and neutrons go in the center Electrons go in electron cloud (we wont go past 18 electrons) 1st energy level holds 2 electrons 2nd energy level holds 8 electrons 3rd energy level holds 18 electrons 4th energy level holds 32 electrons 5th energy level holds 50 electrons 6th energy level holds 72 electrons 7th energy level holds 98 electrons

6 components Electron Shell Electrons protons neutrons
