2 Goals of post operative care:
To help patient Return to normal ( physical and psychological function ). To avoid post operative surgical wound infection To achieve rest and comfort. To prevent operative complication

3 Receiving the patient from recovery room
`L Preparing the patients room . Arrange furniture's so that the stretcher can reach the patients bed . Prepare the bed 'of pt. In a surgical bed . Have an emesis basin and tissue at bed side table . Have equipment that may needed in room to give care to patient like intravenous standard , suction , oxygen equipment .

4 Receiving the patient . Assist the recovery room persons to move the patient from the stretcher . The tubing and pt's dressing must be not disturbed while transferring him . Position the patient in proper way , usually on the back and his head on one side to facilitate drainage from the mouth . Receive the pt's record post operatively and out the immediate needs , Check the patient's condition as follows . Assess the resp. status . Assess the cardio. vascular system . Assess the level of consciousness . Assess the dressing . Assess the tubes .

5 3.Post operative nursing care .
1- Check vital signs every 15 m for several hours very V2hours then every 4 hours for several days 2-Be alert to an obstruction in air way by(aspiration of mucus or vomiting ) . 3--Observe the dressing for bleeding . 4-Watch post operative chilliness and keep pt. Warm 5-Carry out diagrammatic breathing , coughing and leg exercise every 2 hours

6 6-Change position in bed every 1-2 hours .
7-Early ambulating . 8-Help to maintain proper fluid ,food and electrolyte in take according to order . 9-Help to promote urinary and intestinal elimination. 10-Promote rest and sleep . 11-Psychological support. 12-Teaching ( post op. diet) . 13-Care of wound and dressing change .

7 The common post operative discomfort :
Nausea and vomiting . Pain . Hiccups. Urinary retention . Thirst . Anxiety and insomnia . Post operative complication. Immediate complication . Later complication .

8 Immediate complication :
The complication occur in patients who received prolonged or deep anesthesia . Respiratory difficulties Circulatory failure 2. Later complication Shock . Hemorrhage Wound infection . Alelectasis . Respiratory tract infection Urinary tract infection . Thrombophelbities . Pulmonary imbolism. Emotional disturbance .

9 Signs and Symptoms : Pail and cramping in the calf of the leg . Swelling /edema. Fever some time with chill . Redness in area . Nsg care : Teach the pt. To do exercise of leg and feet . Wrap the legs from toes to groin with elastic material Bed rest . Elevate the leg to reduce pressure . Don't massage the leg . Anticoagulant as order ( heparin IN) and analgesics as order .

10 4. Pulmonary embolism By clot or any foreign mater
Signs and Symptoms : Shortness of breath Sharp chest pain . Rapid pulse . Rapid resp . Coughing some times with hemoptysis Hypoxia

11 Nsg care : Bed rest Sime fowler position to prevent dyspnea . 02 theory as ordered . Checking vital signs . Maintains fluid and electrolyte balance . Control pain with prescribed drugs . Emotional support.

12 Nursing care of post — operative complication :
Hemorrhage : Is excessive blood loss owing to the escape of blood from resells in short period of time . Signs and symptoms : Bleeding from external or internal places . rplus . Hypertension . Thirst . Pale . Cold and moist skin . Rest and anxiety . Rapid respiration. Unconscious .

13 Nursing care Apply pressure dressing on bleeding site Checking dressing regularly . Check vital signs . Nursing care of pt. on shock . Compensate the blood in-loss . 2.Wound infection . Signs and symptomsRedness Tenderness high of temp . Drainage with bed order . Rapid pulse rate .

14 Nursing care : Clean and irrigate at the wound Good nutrition and fluid . Strike aseptic techniques in dressing . Be prepared to administer antibiotic . 3. Thrombo phlebitis :Is an inflammation in a vein associated with thrombus (blood clot)
