Milwee Middle School Summer Bridges Program

2 5.5 Applying Operations w/ Rational Numbers

3 Essential Question: How can you solve problems involving multiplication and division of fractions and decimals? First, write both numbers in the same form, either fractions or decimals. Then multiply or divide the numbers.

4 If the divisor is a decimal how do you make it a whole number?
Multiply both the divisor and the dividend by the same power of ten to make the divisor a whole number.

5 What steps should you follow to interpret a word problem?
Analyze Information Formulate a Plan Solve Justify and Evaluate

6 Why might it be practical to use decimals?
Money is usually expressed as a decimal.

7 How can you check to see if your answer is reasonable?
Rounding

8 Summary: How can you solve problems that involve both fractions and decimals?

9 Movie Tickets

10 2.1 - Greatest Common Factor
GCF worksheet (formative)

11 Essential Question: How can you find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers?
List the factors of each number, and then identify the factors shared by the numbers. The greatest common factor of two or more numbers is the greatest value that is a factor of each of the numbers.

12 What is the relationship between the factors of a number and the number?
Every factor of a number has a “partner”. For example, if 3 is a factor of 18, to determine its partner you should ask yourself, “what number multiplied by 3 equals 18?” Since the answer is 6, 6 is also a factor of 18.

13 Summary: How can you find the GCF of two or more numbers?

14 Find the greatest common factor of 24 and 36
Find the greatest common factor of 24 and 36. Show your work and explain how you found your answer.

15 2.2 - Least Common Multiple
LCM Worksheet (formative)

16 Essential Question: How can you find least common multiple of two whole numbers?
List multiples of both numbers. The least common multiple (LCM) will be the least multiple that is common to both numbers. It can be used for determining the least number that both numbers will divide into without a remainder.

17 What is the multiple of a number?
The product of the number an any nonzero whole number. There is no limit as to how many multiples you can list for a given number.

18 When listing numbers to find the LCM, how do you know when to stop?
When you find the first common multiple you can stop.

19 When finding the least common multiple of a pair of numbers, which number will you more likely need to list more multiples of to find the LCM? The lesser number will require a longer list of multiples thatn the greater number.

20 How can repeated addition help you find the LCM?
It can help make sure that you do not omit a multiple from your list.

21 Summary: How can you find the LCM of two numbers?

22 Find the least common multiple of 8 and 12
Find the least common multiple of 8 and 12. Show your work and explain how you found your answer.

23 The Florist Shop The florist can order roses in bunches of one dozen and lilies in bunches of 8. Last month she ordered the same number of roses as lilies. If she ordered no more than 100 roses, how many bunches of each could she have ordered? What is the smallest number of bunches of each that she could have ordered? Explain your reasoning.

24 4.1 - Applying GCF & LCM to Fractions Operations

25 Essential Question: How can you use the GCF and LCM when adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions? You use the GCF to simplify fractions when you find sums. Differences, and products of fractions. You use the LCM of the denominators of fractions to add and subtract fractions.

26 What are the two ways that you can multiply fractions?
Simplify after you multiply by dividing the numerator and denominator of the product by the GCF. Simplify before multiplying by dividing the numerator and denominator by a common factor.

27 Does the order in which you multiply fractions matter?
No. The Commutative Property of Multiplication states that changing the order of the factors does not change the product.

28 How can you tell when it would be easier to simplify before multiplying than to simplify the product? When one of the factors in the numerator is the same as one of the factors in the denominator, it is easier to simplify before multiplying.

29 What does the multiplication sign mean?
“of”

30 Why can you write 18 as 18/1? 18 is a rational number, and you can write every rational number as a quotient of two numbers.

31 Do you have to find a common denominator before adding and subtracting fractions?
Yes.

32 Summary: How are adding and subtracting two fractions and multiplying two fractions similar and different?
