Promote overall physical wellbeing Promote physiological benefits such as increased flexibility, improved circulation, general improvement of body composition and muscle development, better posture, balances and coordination. Physical activity is critical to the development and maintenance of good health. Participation in physical activity can increase self confidence and self esteem in a supportive and enjoyable environment which may result in better management of stress, anxiety, and depression. Students gain appreciation for physical activity as well as sports Improved sensitivity, understanding, appreciation, and consideration of others for both their similarities and differences Motivate others to become physically active/fit Life long lessons are learned to utilize and manage throughout the years
NYS Standards NASPE Standard 1Standard 1: Personal Health and Fitness Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health. Respect: 1. You are here to learn. Respect yourself by getting the most out of the class. 2. Give instructor your full attention during verbal instruction 3. Responsibility : 1. Only you are responsible for your own actions good or bad. There will be consequences! 2. You are expected to come to class prepared, eager to participate in the proper Physical Education attire. Example: tied sneakers, shorts, sweats, T-shirt, sweat shirt, appropriate tank tops. Absolutely no gum chewing or jewelry 3. Be on time to Class! Students have 5 minutes to change for class. If late then there will be a deduction off their daily participation grade. 4. Your locker and your belongings are your own responsibility. Make sure you double check that you have locked your locker. 5. Do not leave class until dismissed. If caught leaving class early there are consequences. 6. If you cannot participate for any reason, a doctors note is required
The New York Healthy Steps The New York Healthy Steps This program is only available to teachers and students who live in New York. It is a program designed to get the children in NY to increase their level of daily physical activity, in addition to regular physical education classes. The program is offered twice a year. Teachers in schools register and then they choose 10 days to record the steps or miles their students walk. The school recording the most miles during the 10 day time period wins the competition and the top schools earn prizes. The Get Active Stay Active Log Web Site The Get Active Stay Active Log Web Site It is age-appropriate for 4th grade and up. This site encourages students to maintain and increase their physical activity by logging onto the site to record their physical activity minutes and/or pedometer steps. Students can also create a personal exercise history log, view their progress on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly time period, earn awards (PALA) and certificates of improvement for regularly logging steps or minutes, and see fitness tips to find new ways to be active. Pickle ball Tournament The PE department puts together a tournament where students and teacher may unite or face each other in a pickle ball tournament. This takes place after school in Late January. Students apply skills taught in class to battle out their opponents.
Athletics Carwash- Each Spring Session Sports team (girls and boys) unite to raise money for the Athletic Program by washing people of the communities cars for $5 in the teachers lot. Breast Cancer Fund Raiser Tournament- The girls volleyball teams face off against neighboring high schools to help raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Takes place in October. Hoops for Heart- a terrific program that teaches children how to live a healthy, active lifestyle. It is easy to run, fun for all, and most importantly it contributes to saving lives in the fight against heart disease and stroke, our nation's number one and three killers. Takes place in December.
Jump Rope For Heart- a national educational fund-raising program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). This program engages students in a physical activity (jumping rope) while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research. Takes place in February Special Olympics- Get involved in your community by coaching, competing, supporting, or volunteering in the Special Olympics. This is your opportunity to join the handicapped and help them develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy throughout your participation and assist in training for life obstacles and achievements.
