1 Bioenergy Greenhouse gas emissions: Align Calculations in Europe
BioGrace-II Contract number: IEE/11/733/SI Project duration: April 1, March 31, 2015 Date of creation of these slides: May 2015 Slide IEEA publishable slides

2 BioGrace-II – project summary
Aim Harmonise calculations of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for electricity and heat from biomass in response to the call from European industry for harmonisation of biomass sustainability criteria. Expected results An Excel GHG calculation tool for electricity and heat from biomass Agreement in member states (6 or more) to use a harmonised approach Involvement of companies and verifiers Slide IEEA publishable slides

3 BioGrace-II – project background
Sustainability criteria for electricity and heat from solid and gaseous biomass are not yet harmonised EC makes proposals, which are not binding 2010 report (COM(2010)11) and 2014 update (SWD(2014)259 Project BioGrace-I has produced harmonised GHG calculation tool for biofuels New project BioGrace-II produced similar tool for electricity and heat from biomass ( Within framework of SWD(2014)259 and COM(2010)11 In close contact to policy makers, companies and verifiers Slide IEEA publishable slides

4 BioGrace – objectives and main steps
Key objectives are: Develop a GHG calculation tool for electricity and heat from biomass Cause that GHG calculations in different MS are harmonised Cause that companies (including verifiers) give feedback on the calculation tool and use it Main steps are: Find out every detail of calculations that led to default values in SWD(2014)259 and accompanying JRC report on GHG calculations, and make them public Produce an Excel tool making these calculations transparent and allowing stakeholders to make own calculations Discuss with policy makers and convince them to choose for harmonised GHG calculations Broadly disseminate the results to European stakeholders Slide IEEA publishable slides

5 BioGrace – results (1/2) Three versions of the BioGrace-II GHG calculation tool for electricity and heat from biomass were published Harmonisation of GHG emissions was discussed with policy makers from 13 member states Denmark and Netherlands have decided to harmonise GHG calculations by using the BioGrace-II tool During 9 feedback sessions and 3 public workshops more than 100 companies have commented on the key outputs of the BioGrace-II products 57 verifier trainers from voluntary schemes and verifiers operating under those schemes have been trained in GHG calculations during 5 training sessions Slide IEEA publishable slides

6 BioGrace – results (2/2) 25 video instructions were prepared and put online via YouTube. These video instructions assist users of the BioGrace-II GHG calculation tool in understanding the basics and in getting into the details. The BioGrace-II activities and results were disseminated through a leaflet and a brochure, 8 newsletters and presentations at international conferences. Slide IEEA publishable slides
