As an industry, pearl diving—or pearling—was treacherous. Divers would need to search through as much as one tonne of oysters to find only a few quality pearls.
This is after swimming to the ocean floor (sometimes over 100 feet) to collect the oysters.
Often, divers would weight themselves with stones, letting go when ready to ascend.
