2 Math is required to get you there!!
Future Careers Math is required to get you there!!

3 Completion of higher order mathematics is required for the following careers that you all have considered: Drafting skills that directly relate to Geometry are required for any of these fields - Fashion Designer - Medical Engineer - Tattoo Artist - Mechanic - Skate Park Designer Criminal Lawyer Nursing Therapist Anything in the Medical Field Teaching Judge Lawyer Forensic Science Police Officer Storm Chaser

4 WARM UP! Find three cities on this map that appear to be collinear.
Chicago, Bloomington, Springfield ANSWER

5 Use Segments and Congruence
Lesson 1.2 Use Segments and Congruence

6 Congruent Segments: exactly the same size and length XY= PQ
Red Liquorish XY= PQ segment XY is congruent to segment PQ

7 Are the segments congruent?
 B  C  D

8 Between: A point is between 2 points if it is on the line (collinear with) that connects those two points.

9 A rule that is accepted without proof
Postulate: A rule that is accepted without proof Liquorish Example

10 Segment Addition Postulate:
Thus, XY + YZ = XZ Segment Addition Postulate

11 Apply the the Segment Addition Postulate
EXAMPLE 1 Apply the the Segment Addition Postulate Maps The cities shown on the map lie approximately in a straight line. Use the given distances to find the distance from Lubbock, Texas, to St. Louis, Missouri. SOLUTION Because Tulsa, Oklahoma, lies between Lubbock and St. Louis, you can apply the Segment Addition Postulate. LS = LT + TS = = 740 The distance from Lubbock to St. Louis is about 740 miles. ANSWER

12 GUIDED PRACTICE for Examples 1 and 2 In the diagram, WY = 30. Can you use the Segment Addition Postulate to find the distance between points W and Z? 4. NO; Because w is not between x and z. ANSWER

13 Use the Segment Addition Postulate to find XZ.
GUIDED PRACTICE 1. Use the Segment Addition Postulate to find XZ. SOLUTION xz = xy + yz Segment addition postulate = Substitute 23 for xy and 50 for yz = 73 Add ANSWER xz = 73

14 Use the diagram to find GH.
EXAMPLE 2 Find a length Use the diagram to find GH. SOLUTION Use the Segment Addition Postulate to write an equation. Then solve the equation to find GH. FG + GH = FH Segment Addition Postulate. 21 + GH = 36 Substitute 36 for FH and 21 for FG. = 15 GH Subtract 21 from each side.

15 Use the diagram at the right to find WX. 5.
GUIDED PRACTICE Use the diagram at the right to find WX. 5. Use the segment addition postulate to write an equation. Then solve the equation to find WX SOLUTION vx = vw + wx Segment addition postulate 144 = 37 + wx Substitute 37 for vw and 144 for vx 107 = wx Subtract 37 from each side ANSWER WX = 107

16 Example 3 Point S is between point R and point T. Use the given information to write an equation in terms of x. Solve the equation. Then find both RS and ST. RS = 3x – 16 ST = 4x – 8 RT = 60 I I 3x-16 I x I
