1 continent – land continental shelf – shallow submerged margin of the continents that lies between the edge of the shoreline and the continental slope; this nearly level area of the continental crust has surface layers composed of sediment or sedimentary rock. continental slope – steeply sloping portion of continental crust found between the continental shelf and continental rise. continental rise – the area at the bottom of the continental slope that extends to the ocean floor. volcanic island arc – an elevated area of the ocean floor created from the release of lava from a volcanic vent. mid-ocean ridge – chain of submarine mountains where oceanic crust is created from rising magma plumes and volcanic activity. Also associated with this feature is plate divergence which creates a rift zone. abyssal plain – the ocean floor; flat plain found at the bottom of the ocean. guyot – a flat-topped seamount; may have been elevated above sea level at one point and made flat by waves ocean trench – deep depression found at the edge of the ocean floor. seamount – a volcanic mountain found on an ocean basin that has an origin not related to a mid-oceanic ridge or a tectonic subduction zone.
