2 Rights & Responsibilities…
What is another name for a boss? What has to happen in order for a business to function properly? Supervisor There needs to be a sharing of rights and responsibilities between employers and employees.

3 Rights of employees/employers…
What are the basic rights of employees? Right to get paid Right to clear expectations Right to work in a clean and safe environment Right to have a break What are the basic rights of employers? Right that employees will be at work on time Right that employees will be respectful Right that employees will follow all rules & policies

4 Responsibilities of employees/employers…
It is the responsibility of the employee to: Show up to work on time Be respectful Follow rules and policies It is the responsibility of the employer to: Pay their employees Provide clear expectations Provide a clean & safe environment Give proper training and supervision Provide employees with a break

5 Performance Evaluations
A performance evaluation is an appraisal, or estimate of how well an employee is doing at his/her job. Employers will conduct a Performance Evaluation to determine if each employee is working at a satisfactory level. Performance evaluations are important for the employer because it provides accountability for the employee. They are usually conducted annually. Almost all firings can be directly related to an employee’s performance.

6 Chain of Command… A system whereby authority passes down from the top through a series of positions The chain of command within an organization can be presented visually in an Organizational Chart. Two characteristics: - Size - Nature of operations two factors that affect the way the chart is represented visually

9 Who tells the person at the top what to do?
Does the owner of a small company have a boss? Does the president of a large corporation have a boss? The Customers Board of Directors Who tells the person at the top what to do?

10 Who are the board of directors?
A board of directors is a body of elected or appointed members who jointly oversee the activities of a company or organization. Typical duties include: Ensuring the availability of financial decisions Approving the annual budget Setting salaries for top management Who are the board of directors?

11 Conflict… A sharp disagreement
Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. Its safe to say that it is going to happen…. The question is, what do you do when it does happen?

Compromise The fight or flight response is a natural response to danger. Our bodies are created to fight or flee when danger is upon us, such as being attacked by a mountain lion Reactions to Conflict

16 Resolving conflicts… How should conflicts be resolved?
Employees should put aside personal differences/feelings and work together What are the steps in a grievance procedure? Discuss issue with your co- worker Bring the issue to an immediate supervisor If the problem continues, bring the issue to a higher authority.

17 How are disagreements handled in a small company vs. a larger company?
Disagreements are handled directly with management Larger company: Disagreements are handled with procedures and committees and all information is documented throughout.

18 Reporting… Reporting is when an employee answers to a higher authority. Two types of reporting: Formal – A planned, carefully written set of procedures used in major corporations or government agencies. Informal – An unplanned structure, with little if any written procedures to guide the actions of employees. Usually found in smaller businesses.

Protected workers rights while on the job: The FLSA established a national minimum wage guaranteed ‘time-and- a-half’ for overtime hourly positions prohibited some employment of minors.

What is minimum wage? The least amount of money a worker may legally receive per hour. Can the State and Federal minimum wage be different? Yes, but the state can’t be lower than the federal What is overtime? 25 Overtime Pay Overtime pay = 1.5 x regular wage
Normal work week = 40 hours Example: Hourly Rate: $10.00/hour Overtime = $10.00 x 1.5 = $15.00/hour Number of hours worked: 47 hours 40 hours x $10.00 = $400.00 7 hours x $15.00 = $105.00 Total gross pay = $505.00 Overtime Pay
