Someone who: Has a long-term goal of pursuing vocational possibilities Wants a good foundation for a job search Has never worked before Has the time to commit to the process Wants to overcome some physical, mental, or financial barriers/obstacles before looking for a job Does not know how his or her interests are transferable into a community job Is dissatisfied with his/her current job Has not experienced positive employment outcomes while using traditional vocational services. Who benefits from Career Discovery?

Think about: What place on the Path to Employment is the individual on? Is the team “stumped” about what moves to make next? Is there any kind of work history? Does the team (individual, family, SSA, provider) understand the concept and the process? Are there unanswered questions? Who benefits from Career Discovery?

9 Since the HCBS Waiver Career Discovery support is outcome- based, it’s a slightly different process than other supports we’re used to authorizing... In essence, we’re paying for a Career Profile that will assist the person on the best possible path to community employment. The Career Profile must contain the requirements for documentation in the Career Planning Rule 5123: (E). How do you authorize?

Career Discovery is a vocational support that helps with informed choice, career planning, and movement on the Path to Community Employment. 12 Career Discovery is a process…
Discovery is the initial step in a customized approach to employment for someone with significant challenges to employment. Discovery is a process designed to learn who a person really is, discovering and honoring their skills, interests, experiences, relationships, etc., and utilizing that information to create a positive personal employment profile. Discovery assumes employability with natural supports and IS NOT a tool to determine people unemployable. Career Discovery is a process…

14 Meet with the family and support team to discuss the Discovery Process, what it is and what to expect Start with a home visit If the person is willing, ask him/her to show you his/her bedroom and focus on how it is organized, what’s in it, and what it says about the person Ask him/her demonstrate how he/she performs chores, engages in activities etc. Throughout the visit observe interactions, living context, interests and skills: Hang Out with Intention (HOI) Make a note of any emerging themes… How do you do Discovery?

15 When you talk with the person’s family and support people, ask for names and contact information of people who know the person well. Ask permission to interview those individuals. Ask about the individual’s interests, support needs, successful support and instructional strategies, skills and performance in various activities. Identify activities to participate in with the individual to verify interests and skills. Are there differences among providers on how you all do Career Discovery? How do you do Discovery?

16 How do you make the Career Profile a useful document?
The Career Profile is a blueprint to help the job-seeker navigate their unique path to employment. It is created from the unique information gathered from getting to know the person and developing and verifying interests and abilities. Share the Career Profile with the person and their team and add/delete/edit as needed. Ensure that the Career Profile is used to capture positive and possible aspects of the individual. How do you make the Career Profile a useful document?
