6 Academics The level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness than anything that happens academically in high school. 7 All students are enrolled in seven 50-minute classes every day.

8 English Mathematics Science Social Studies
All students receive daily instruction aligned to Maryland’s College and Career-Ready Standards in: English Mathematics Science Social Studies English, mathematics, science, and social studies.

9 In addition, Maryland regulations require
all students take: Health Education Physical Education Fine Arts (Music and/or Visual Arts) In addition Maryland regulations require all students to take Health Education (a quarter long course, typically scheduled every other day for a semester), Physical Education (typically scheduled every other day for the entire year), and a Fine Arts (Art and/or Music) course every year.

10 Music Performance Ensemble Options
Band – Chorus – Orchestra Year-long classes Includes a daily large ensemble rehearsal and a weekly small sectional that are scheduled on a rotational basis Ensembles are ability-based. Music teachers will be in contact with elementary programs to schedule meetings and auditions. Please add a note/comment if your school is offering year long art/general music options for 7th and 8th graders.

11 Additional Course Options
Family and Consumer Science Technology Education Reading and/or Math Intervention SCHEDULING NOTES: Almost all six graders will take the Innovation and Inquiry Careers Module which will meet the COMAR careers requirement and review critical reading skills. Students must take Family and Consumer Science in grades 7 or 8 in order to meet the COMAR financial literacy requirements. Selecting both Music Performance and World Language will limit a student’s ability to have access to the other related arts (Art, Family and Consumer Science, General Music, and Technology Education).
