3 Searching for Information
What might you find on Business websites? What might you find on Government websites? What might you find on Social Networking websites? What might you find on Blogs? About the company, its products or services, online purchasing Govt departments, files or forms, elected officials Share photos, games, videos, chat online, messages Enter & share comments, info based on specific topics

4 Answer These… Where can you find information about anything that anyone can add, edit or rearrange? Wiki What has videos that anyone can upload as well as audio in the form of podcasts? YouTube What allows you to subscribe to newsfeeds to get news delivered to your device via a newsreader or app? RSS Feed

5 Wikipedia Is it reliable?
YES- good source of info; good starting point NO- anyone can add or change info to it CHECK OTHER SOURCES TOO!

6 What is a Search Engine? Each search engine keeps a database of sites & keywords Webcrawlers/spiders gather info Each generates a list of results Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc. Results may vary between engines Note that at the top of many results pages are ADS!

17 Review- 3Q What are three common words used for Boolean searching?
AND, OR, NOT If you wanted to search for an exact phrase of school lunch regulations, what would you do? Add quotations around it If you wanted to search for a low fat brownie recipe on recipes.com, what could you enter? “low fat brownie recipe” site: recipes.com

You can find anything on the web Anyone can publish anything on the web DO NOT accept everything as true Learn to evaluate its nature and source

19 Evaluating Website Info
Evaluate this Site Evaluating Website Info Is it RELEVANT? Does it contain the info you’re looking for? Does it cite sources? What is the site’s PURPOSE? Give info, sell product, humor, etc. Is it BIASED? Leaning one way/one opinion Watch for biased ads What is the DOMAIN? .gov, .edu, .org, .com May or may not be reliable Is author RELIABLE? What are their qualifications? Is it CURRENT? Does it have a good LAYOUT? Organized info? Does it have ERRORS? Spelling/grammar? RELEVANT- For example, if you're searching for information about the history of skateboards, a site that sells skateboards may not have what you're looking for. ERRORS- shows little effort; was little effort put into researching the info?

Review all pages of the site Use the handout & your opinions to determine if the site is valid and tell why & why not

21 Intellectual Property Laws
What is intellectual property? Copyright Law Protects owners from having work copied Automatic when created Doesn’t have to display © Must give credit or be fined! Public Domain Available for public use; Should still cite Any .gov, NASA, NOAA, Smithsonian Fair Use Copyrighted material used w/out paying royalties Use for research, reporting, etc. with citing Intellectual Property- any work created or invention by a person or group Piracy is when “borrow” or use some or all of someone else’s intellectual property. Plagiarism: Claiming someone else’s words Legal Ramifications: if you receive a letter asking to remove content/delete files you must do so or you can be sued. The ISP may also terminate your Internet access.
