1 My Career Compass By: Nyssa Estrella

2 What I Want To Do As A Career?
I want to be a screenwriter, which is a person that writes stories and adapts them into scripts for different types of mass media (tv, movies.Etc) They are often freelance writers and make money by selling their scripts to companies. Screenwriters in the US are often unionised by the Writers Guild Of America. Screenwriters must have excellent writing skills (especially script writing) and critical thinking, must be able to be determined and adaptable, persuasive, and socially perceptive. It’s also great if a screenwriter had experienced various interesting events in his or her past. Most of the skills and requirements above are some that I already have, but some like my writing skills would need to be tweaked and adjusted to fit the standards. Screenwriters’ salaries depend on what they are writing (original work ($62,642) or rewriting existing work ($20,554)). They are paid residuals, which are made from the profits from DVD sales, reruns, and downloads.

3 My Short And Long Term Goals:
Short Term Goals: I want to get accepted into the Creative Writing program at Simon Fraser or the Media Arts Program at UBC. I want graduate high school with a GPA of 3 or higher with a part-time job at MacDonald's. Then, in at least two years of my education; I want to help out at the Evergreen Cultural Centre as a Improvisation Theatre teacher who teaches improv to underprivileged teenagers. Latter helping to write/direct some of Evergreen Cultural Centre’s drama productions Long Term Goals: While, I’m at Evergreen Cultural Centre, I would actually start coming up with some of my own original scripts and scripts for television shows airing at the time (with me aiming at writing children/adult animated comedic sitcoms.) Start trying to get my own pick-up truck and tiny, mobile, house. Then, I’m planning on moving to California so I can get a writing jobs at Disney-ABC Television Group (working on current productions and reviving some of their older animated productions), Fox Television Group (aiming at getting a job as a Simpsons writer.), or Nickelodeon ( working on any of their current shows.) -After a few years, I’ll start developing and pitching to studios, an animated sitcom that uses Vancouver as main setting.

4 Possible Barriers, Pushbacks, And Problems Down The Road:
One hurdle I would encounter is no studio actually buying my scripts (usually in between assignments), but to support myself during that time; I would start an educational channel on YouTube (where I would come up with scripts and storylines to make high school subjects a lot more interesting) and start writing and helping out for Buzzfeed. I would also try to start writing more of a variety of scripts that can fit a studio’s needs Another more important hurdle is actually dealing with some of my study habits/ work habits (like my time management), but I would make sure I would deal with that throughout high school so it doesn't follow me to university or my job.

5 What High School Courses Are Recommended To Become A Screenwriter?
It’s great to actually take courses that involve a lot of reading, English, and writing. It’s also great to work for the school newspaper or the school yearbook.
