Whıle readıng JOHN THE LIBRARIAN What do you think of John and his job? John is a librarian in a local library. It’s his responsibility to maintain and organize all the books in the library. He has to make sure they are all in perfect condition and organized. When someone rents a book and brings it back, he has to check closely for any damage and sometimes he has to clean it. He also has to check that the books haven’t been put in the wrong category but he doesn’t do it as much as he should because it’s a very dull job. John is, of course, grateful that he has a nine to five job where he doesn’t have to work at weekends or do night- shifts but he thinks there are a lot of things he can complain about. For example, he often has to work late but his boss won’t pay him overtime. He can’t leave early because a lot of people don’t leave the library until the last minute and his boss expects him to clean and tidy the library before leaving. John has a passion for literature and so he likes working there because he gets to read hundreds of great books but sometimes he finds it frustrating. For example, sometimes he has to throw books away if they are in bad condition but he doesn’t want to throw them away and he can’t take them with him because of copyright issues. One day, John would like to leave this boring job and get paid to be a professional writer. He must improve his writing in his free time but for that, he has to quit his job so he can become a writer full-time. He can’t do that because he needs a job to pay the bills and rent. He often tells himself he mustn’t let himself stuck in this job but it’s too easy to stay in a stress-free job. Adapted from NİŞANTAŞI ÜNİVERSİTESİ ©
