Rules: Original carriers with approved supply list, only. No parachutes. Must land on the target sheet. With the egg, the carrier must weigh 70g - 1,000g. Longest dimension cannot exceed 25 cm. Volume cannot exceed 800 cm 3. 30 seconds to place the egg into the carrier. 30 seconds to remove the egg from the carrier. Scoring: S final = 75 S - any point deductions ( W + L 2 + V) Where S is the Success factor with values of: S = 100 if your egg does not break S = 50 if the egg cracks S = 1 if the egg leaks W = weight of the container w/egg if it does not exceed 1 kg. L = longest dimension in cm V = volume in cm 3 50 point deductions for exceeding time/weight or missing the target. S final = total points

http://youtu.be/ojMxlO10OGc Over the next two weeks you and a partner will design and construct a carrier to protect an eggling. Each of Mrs. Borom-Phillips classes will compete amongst themselves to become one of two class winners. The two teams from each class will be competitors in the Yokosuka Middle School Science Olympiad which will be held on Wednesday, May 8 th. Those 10 teams will compete against each other to become the top Egg Drop Engineers earning 1 st place, 2 nd place and 3 rd place. The three winners will then progress to the Kinnick High school Amazing Race Competition which will be held at the end of May. Let the competition begin!

Original carriers with approved supply list, only.

Approved Supplies Provided by your teacher: 5 – Rubber bands ? – Straws 7 – Chopsticks 5 – Cotton balls 2 – Printer paper 2 – Jumbo paper clips 10 – Packing popcorn 2 feet – String You may trade out your supplies with other teams to get more of what you want. *Use only enough tape, glue, and staples to hold your carrier together.

S final = 75 S - any point deductions ( W + L 2 + V) Where S is the Success factor with values of: S = 100 if your egg does not break S = 50 if the egg cracks S = 1 if the egg leaks W = weight of the container w/egg if it does not exceed 1 kg. L = longest dimension in cm V = volume in cm 3 50 point deductions for exceeding time/weight or missing the target. S final = total points

S final = 75 S - any point deductions ( W + L 2 + V) Show your work. S – You did not break your egg so you get 75 x 100 points. W – Your carrier weighs 500 grams. L 2 – Your carriers longest side is 10 centimeters so, multiply 10 x 10. V – The volume (3 sides) of your carrier is10cm x 10cm x 8cm. No deductions, so – 0. Now divide and write your answer as a decimal. S final - What is your final score?

Heres a way to show your work. S final = 75 x 100 - 0 [ 500+ (10 x 10)+ (10 x 10 x 8)] S final = 7,500 - 0 [ 500+ 100+ 800] S final = 7,500 - 0 1400 S final = Divide 7500 into 1400 and round to the nearest hundredth.

S final = 5.36 So your score is= 5.36.

Homework ~ Egg Drop Scoring Practice Problems 1.Team HD had the following measurements. Mass = 500 grams. The all the sides were 6 cm long. Their egg landed safely. What was their score? __________ 2.Team Egg-static had the following measurements. Mass = 789 grams. The long side was15 cm. The other sides were 9 cm and 6 cm. Their egg landed safely. What was their score? _________ 3.Team Egg-citing had the following measurements. Mass = 926 grams. The long side was 10cm. The other sides were 8 cm and 9cm. Their egg cracked but did not leak upon landing. What was their score? _________ How to score your carrier and drop: S final = 75 S - any point deductions ( W + L 2 + V) Where S is the Success factor with values of: S = 100 if your egg does not break S = 50 if the egg cracks S = 1 if the egg leaks W = weight of the container w/egg if it does not exceed 1 kg. L = longest dimension in cm V = volume in cm 3 50 point deductions for exceeding time/weight or missing the target. S final = total points
