1 Simulation Introduction of microscopic simulation
Introduction of simulation Introduction of microscopic simulation

2 What is Simulation? This is a fundamental and quantitative way to
understand complex systems/phenomena which is complementary to the traditional approaches of theory and experiment. Modeling and Simulation (Mod/Sim) are concerned with powerful methods of analysis designed to exploit high performance computing. This approach is becoming increasingly widespread in basic research and advanced technological applications, cross cutting the fields of physics, chemistry, mechanics, engineering, and biology.

3 What is Simulation?

4 Why Simulation? • A real system may not be there (example:
new sub-network) • A real system may be too difficult or too expensive to access • A real system may not be perturbed (example: accident)

5 Advantages of simulation
• New policies, operating procedures, decision rules, information flows, etc, can be explored without disrupting ongoing operations of the real system • New hardware designs, physical layouts, transportation systems, etc, can be tested without committing resources for their acquisition. • Developing simulation model increases understanding of the system e.g. New traffic signal timing plan; new routing strategy
