What is cultural sensitivity?
Cultural sensitivity is being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value – positive or negative, better or worse, right or wrong.

Keep these things in mind:
We are going beyond “not offending” people; we want all visitors to feel welcome at the Museum. Training is a safe space where you are free to ask questions about if something is offensive.

Don’t point out differences within the group
NO: Does anyone need to use the elevator? YES: I’m going to use the stairs. If anyone would like to use the elevator, it is on our right.

Don’t make assumptions
NO: Tell a parent you want to visit the Museum. YES: Tell a grown up you want to visit the Museum. NO: When we travel a great distance, we often use an airplane. YES: Today, some people use an airplane when traveling a great distance.

Person-first nomenclature
NO: A wheelchair-bound person YES: A person that uses a wheelchair

Us vs. Them Dynamic NO: We follow Christianity while Native Americans have a different set of religious beliefs. YES: Here are 3 members of the Laguna Pueblo practicing for a ceremony as part of their religious beliefs. Laguna Eagle Dancers, Lee Marmon, 1949
