1 Water Framework Directive
GIS Working Group Water Framework Directive Working Group Meeting 7th-8th March 2002 GIS Data Model (TG11) Steve Peedell GIS Specialist Institute for Environment & Sustainability Joint Research Centre

2 A GIS Data Model for the WFD
High level view A draft model in Unified Modelling Language (UML) has been developed Detail Attributes – which should be included? Units, especially for Type B surface water characterisation Feature representations e.g. options for river segments (route and measure systems), groundwater body representations etc. Sources of data Input to prototype development activity

3 Data Model Elements

4 Management / Administration

5 Data Model – Surface Water

6 Surface Water Feature Representation
Rivers Entire segment from confluence to confluence (node to node) ? Partial segment, defined by measure? Absolute distance or relative distance (%) Stream order?

7 Groundwater Delineation Representation Questions
2D = Surface geology – doesn’t represent the subsurface reality 2D + borehole log = from abstraction 2D , overlapping polygons (“vertical slices”) Questions Annex II 2.1 (initial characterisation) and 2.2 (further characterisation) attributes to be included? Pressures Overlying strata characteristics Dependent ecosystems Etc.

8 Data Model - Monitoring

9 Prototype Development (TG13)
Activity to be launched following 2nd Workshop Should have enough input from other TGs (and WFD WGs) to begin Priority deliverables: Requirements document Functional specifications document Architectural design document Architectures Fully centralised Fully distributed A hybrid solution Partners (GR/AT expressed interest in 1st Workshop) Standards to be incorporated

10 Prototype Development
Open discussion Agree on a general definition of the prototype objectives Centralised – collaboration focussed on data provision Distributed – requires much more technical input, and proactive links with other interoperability initiatives
