1 List the planets in order of their distance from the Sun.

2 Size Comparison

3 How do we survive on our planet?
Unit 5 - Lesson 1

4 What do we need to live? Take ONE minute to write down all the NECESSARY things we need to be able to live and thrive here on Earth. Oxygen Water The sun Plants Atmosphere

5 Important factors Proximity to the sun
What is the distance from the planet to the sun? This affects temperature and atmosphere Size of the planet Changes the effects of gravity More mass, more gravity Effects the gases in the atmosphere and if it is strong enough to hold onto them

6 Important factors Planet Composition What is the planet made of?
Is there available oxygen? Does it have an atmosphere to protect it? Availability of water Too close to the sun, too hot for water Too far, water is frozen Water vapor regulates temperature...like sweat from your body.

7 Important factors Orbital Path/Tilt of the Axis
23.5° tilt + the revolution around the sun is what makes Earth’s seasons change and keeps a STABLE, not CONSTANT, climate. Creates equal light and darkness with rotation on its axis every 24 hours In comparison, Venus takes 243 days to complete ONE rotation on its axis---meaning they have 121 days of darkness

8 Design your own habitable planet...
Your task is to design your own planet that can sustain life. You have some creative freedom here, but you need to be able to EXPLAIN/JUSTIFY your decisions. The DISTANCE that your planet is from the sun. Justify how your decision here is important to allow life to survive on your planet. The SIZE of your planet. Justify how your decisions here support life on your planet. The COMPOSITION of your planet. What is your planet made of? What gases make up the atmosphere? Justify how your decisions here support life on the planet. The orbital path of your planet around the sun and the tilt of your planet’s axis. Your planet’s length of year and day/night. This information will need to be included in your presentation as a diagram or illustration. And, of course, don’t forget a creative name for your planet.

9 How will you present your planet?
You have options here… Poster PowToon Prezi Google Slides Brochure You will have the rest of the week and Monday to complete.
