2 Emancipation Proclamation
Was an executive order given by president Lincoln Issued on January 1, 1863 Addressed the legal status of 3 million enslaved people

3 Goals Decrease man power of the confederacy
Strengthen the number of union soldiers Free slaves as areas in rebellion were quelled Change the overall goals of the Civil War

4 It did not: Could not be enforced in areas still under rebellion
Grant citizenship of ex-slaves Outlaw slavery Compensate owners

5 Outcome: About 20,000-50,000 slaves from places where rebellion had been subdue were immediately emancipated Emancipation became an explicit goal of the Civil War Led to the 13th amendment

6 Moving toward Reconstruction
From 1865 to 1877 (After the Civil War) Deciding and creating what the government/country will look like Reconstruction of state and society (especially focusing on the south)
