2 What is a preposition? A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

4 Other Prepositions Facts
~Some prepositions are made up of more than one word. These are called compound prepositions. ~Prepositions can be in any part of a sentence. ~In order for a word to be a preposition, there must be a prepositional phrase—a preposition followed by an object (usually a noun). ~Many sentences contain more than one preposition.

5 Examples of Prepositions in Sentences:
Tanya’s pet hamster likes sleeping behind the computer. The prepositional phrase: behind is the preposition, computer is the object of the preposition and the is a modifier. Has your house ever lost power during a thunderstorm? The prepositional phrase: during is the preposition, thunderstorm is the object of the preposition, and a is a modifier. Some animals hunt only between dusk and dawn. The prepositional phrase: between is the preposition, dusk and dawn are both objects, and and is the conjunction joining the two objects.

6 Practice Locate the preposition in each of the following sentences:
1.) My fourth period class is always ready for lunch. 2.) My neighbor broke his leg when he fell down the stairs. 3.) Our old cat creeps from room to room. 4.) Bring me the largest head of lettuce, please. 5.) In the morning, the sun will rise at 6:33.

7 Determine if the underlined words are prepositions.
6.) The tornado struck our neighborhood without warning. 7.) We do not have a basement in our home. 8.) I ran into the bathroom for safety. 9.) Suddenly a siren went off. 10.) Then everything grew calm—it seemed almost too calm.
