1 Prophecy & Eschatology
Coastland University Pastor Brett Peterson, Ph.D.

2 One of the biggest proofs of the Bible is fulfilled prophecy.
“Surly the Lord God does nothing without first revealing it through His servants the Prophets” Amos 3:7 NASB

3 The Church, since John wrote the book of Revelation, has tried to understand the events that would take place in the last days. Over the generations, tradition has formulated three major views. A- Millennialism, Pre-millennialism, and post-millennialism.

4 4 Schools of Interpretation
Preterist Revelation relates to the time it was written Describes struggle between Church and Rome Strength=Revelation relevant to the early church Limitation=no significant message beyond 1st century Historicist A continuous chronicle of church history Symbols represent different events in history Strength=strong emphasis on sovereignty of God Limitation=leaves room for multiple interpretations

5 4 Schools of Interpretation (continued)
Futurist Bulk of Revelation deals with the future action of God in history Chapters 4-22 focus on events leading to Christ’s return, kingdom, final judgment, eternal state Strength=emphasis on God’s progressive activity Limitation?=It’s written for the end time church Idealist/Spiritual Revelation paints picture of struggle between good/evil God is strengthening the church with hope of victory Strength=appropriate use of symbols in Revelation Limitation=skeptical attitude toward predictive prophecy

6 Millennial Perspectives on Revelation
Premillenial Christ will return before the millennium Pre-tribulation/Pre-millennial Christ will rapture the church before 7 year tribulation After the tribulation, Christ begins 1,000 year reign Before reign begins, Satan is defeated at Armageddon Christ established his earthly kingdom/rules for 1,000 years Christ and His people then enter eternity Mid-Tribulation/Pre-millennial Christ raptures the church at mid-point of tribulation -Pre-Wrath Church ruptured prior to the wrath Post-Tribulation/Pre-millennial Christ will meet the church in the air after the tribulation Millennium begins with Christ’s & church’s descent

7 Millennial Perspectives on Revelation (continued)
Post-Millennial The return of Christ will occur at the conclusion of the millennium Return occurs at the close of a lengthy period of human progress Amillennial 1,000 year is a symbol of Christ’s present spiritual kingship at the right hand of God Millennium is this present period Gospel can spread freely Church can influence history by bringing people to faith

8 1. Preterist - limit the historical references to the 1st century & the struggle b/t the church and the Roman gov’t. A. Strength: Rev. is relevant to life of early church. B. Weakness: Unable to find significant message beyond 1st century. Unless pattern repeated.

9 2. Historicist - a continuous chronicle of church history from apostolic times until Christ’s return. Seals, trumpets and bowls are different events in history. A. Strength: Sovereignty of God. B. Weakness: Widespread interpretations linking Rev. to world events.

10 3. Futurist - bulk of Rev. (4-22) content refers to the future action of God in history: Christ’s return, establishment of kingdom, final judgment & eternal state. A. Strength: progressive activity of God in world history. B. Weakness: Little application for original hearers.

11 4. Idealist - (spiritual) omits reference to time since the reference is to a continuous struggle b/t good and evil in the church and the history of the world. God is strengthening the church with a promise of ultimate victory. A. Strength: recognizes symbols. B. Weakness: skepticism toward predictive prophecy, failed perspective of the actions of God in history.

12 3 MILLENNIAL PERSPECTIVES ON REVELATION

13 PREMILLENNIAL 1. Premillennialist - return of Christ will precede the millenial reign. A. Dispensationalist - Return in 2 stages: (1) Prior to tribulation - rapture of believers (2) After tribulation - to establish millennial rule. B. Historical - Return in 1 stage at the close of tribulation & prior to millennial reign.

14 POSTMILLENNIALISTS 2. Postmillennialists - return of Christ will follow the millennium (a lengthy period of human progress) with widespread conversion and moral repentance. Rev is symbolical of victory.

15 AMILLENNIALISTS 3. Amillennialists - millennium is symbolical. Of his heavenly kingdom now. Or of the earthly situation where worldwide evangelism is possible.

16 Our Stance We will let the text speak for itself.
This is an interactive class – I encourage questions, comments, and interaction.

17 Within each school of thought, there are various timelines and interpretations – yet I believe there is only one interpretation that is Biblical and that will take place. When we think of prophecy, what books do we think of? What words do we think of? For the Bible scholar, there are 17 prophetic books in the Bible. Rabbis state there are 48 men is scripture (OT) called prophets, and 7 women in scripture called prophetesses. Most of what we know is tainted with tradition, and a lot of what we think we know is simply not part of the Biblical Truth given to us.

18 Eschatology – the study of end times or the ‘last days’.
Rev. – the apocalypse - the ‘unveiling’, yet the church has come to think it is veiled. Rev. 1:3 – Why do you think the enemy is trying his best to veil the eyes of believers from prophecy?

19 Sir Isaac Newton was a Christian, and he was a prophet
Sir Isaac Newton was a Christian, and he was a prophet. He foretold this class! “About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up who will turn their attention to the prophesies, and insist on their literal interpretation, in the midst of much clamor and opposition.” The goal of this class is to pull back the veil, and give us a glimpse of events yet to occur.

20 Introduction What is Prophecy?
Thayers Greek lexicon defines it like this: “A discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; or by foretelling future events.” There are two types of Prophecy – predictive and didactic.

21 Why Study Prophecy? We study prophecy to increase our faith – our foundation on Jesus Christ: Ephesians 2: “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, (20) having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone” We are about to embark on a great journey – into the past and into the future.

22 Interpretive Rules 1. Always take the literal, natural, and common meaning of the passage unless there is overwhelming evidence that you can not interpret the word or concept in that manner. 2. If a word or concept is defined in scripture and carries an inferred meaning, you must use this meaning first, and change the meaning only if there are overwhelming proofs in scripture to do so. 3. Find out who the author is talking to and which of the three major prophetic groups the prophecy applies: a. Israel b. The Church c. Gentiles/the World 4. Any symbolism we are meant to understand will be clarified in other scripture.

23 Cyrus Isaiah 44:28 "It is I who says of Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.' And he declares of Jerusalem, 'She will be built,' And of the temple, 'Your foundation will be laid.'" This was fulfilled 160 years after it was prophesied!

24 The Bible is reliable! And because it is, prophecy will be fulfilled!

25 Daniel 9 9:24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy...

26 Daniel 9 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’”

27 Daniel 9 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’

28 Daniel 9 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’

29 Daniel 9 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’
