1 TONE

2 WHAT IS TONE? Tone: the writer's attitude toward the material and/or readers. Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc.

3 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU I hate the way you talk to me
And the way you cut your hair I hate the way you drive my car I hate it when you stare I hate your big dumb combat boots And the way you read my mind I hate you so much that it makes me sick It even makes me rhyme I hate the way you're always right I hate it when you lie I hate it when you make me laugh Even worse when you make me cry I hate the way you're not around And the fact that you didn't call But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.

4 SMALL GROUP WORK Work with a partner to label the tone of the speaker in the beginning of the poem, draw a line at the tone shift, and label the tone of the speaker at the end of the poem. Label all the tone words you and your partner come up with to support your opinion of the tone.

5 OKAY…LET’S DISCUSS THIS
So what is the tone? Volunteers???? Did other pairs have different ideas about the tone than your pair did? Why? What is important about catching the tone of the speaker? Is it more difficult to understand written tone versus spoken tone? Why? Have you ever gotten or sent a text message where there has been a misunderstanding because friends misread the tone of the message? Why does this happen? Is it due to the brevity of this type of communication?

6 NOW LET’S CONSULT A PROFESSIONAL
