Law of Conservation of Mass

Law of Conservation of Mass: When matter undergoes a chemical or physical change, mass is neither created or destroyed!

For example: when wood burns… where does the mass go?

The CARBON combines with the OXYGEN and turns into CARBON DIOXIDE!

Law of Conservation of Matter
In a chemical reaction, matter is not created or destroyed, but the atoms may rearrange themselves into new molecules. Scientists can balance equations be adding coefficients to the formulas to help make sense of the amount of atoms.

For example, where would we add a number to make the equation BALANCED
For example, where would we add a number to make the equation BALANCED? 6C + O2  6CO2

Balancing Chemical Equations

Photosynthesis

__CO2 + __H2O  __C6H12O6 + __O2 Photosynthesis

6CO H2O  C6H12O O2 Photosynthesis

Law of Conservation of Mass: Balancing Equations
Carbon – Brown Oxygen – Red Hydrogen - Blue Modeling Activity

H2 + N2  NH3 ISN pg 41

Balance the following equations!

Zn + HCl  ZnCl2 + H2 (not balanced…)
More Practice… Zn + HCl  ZnCl2 + H (not balanced…) C3H8 + O2  CO2 + H2O (not balanced…)
