2 What are Laws? Laws are simply rules that everyone must obey because they have been agreed by Parliament and the justice system. Laws are enforced or applied by the police and the courts to make sure that everyone follows them.

3 Society needs laws because….
Laws mean that everyone behaves in a predictable manner, for example everyone drives on the left hand side of the road. Laws protect weaker members of society, for example it is easy to take advantage of the young, sick or elderly. Laws mean that everyone knows what is right and what is wrong, for example what age should children attend school until. Laws prevent people from being selfish, for example they keep people under control. Laws mean people know they will be punished if they commit a crime, for example a person who steals repeatedly will be given a prison sentence.
