1 Do Now: Write in Agenda Pass homework to center of table
Get out paper and pen Listen for instruction

2 Topic: Education Advances Unit: The Renaissance
EQ: In what ways did education advance during the Renaissance? What was the effect?

3 Mathematics 2 major ideas pushed interest in Mathematics
1. Need for accurate accounting by merchants 2. Scholars believed mathematics could help explain the universe Began to study ancient math texts Built upon ideas

4 Mathematics Cont. Luca Pacioli was the first to publish symbols for + and – The symbol for square root √, was also developed during this time period.

5 Think Pair Share Think about it: What do you think advances in mathematics would lead to? Provide an example. Write your response in your notes Pair: With your partners discuss your responses. Be prepared to SHARE

6 Engineering Advances in math allowed engineers to:
Improve techniques Use new formulas to strengthen buildings Da Vinci spent hours dreaming up wild and curious inventions. Write an example of one of Da Vinci’s inventions…

7 Architecture New mathematical concepts enabled architects to:
strengthen buildings create structures that had previously been considered impossible.

8 Architecture Cont. Brunelleschi designed a huge dome for the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral in Florence. Developed new method: Instead of a single heavy layer he built the dome out of two light layers This would become known as Il Duomo

9 Astronomy Nicolaus Copernicus came up with the radical idea that our solar system was heliocentric (having the sun as the center). Galileo Galilei crafted telescopes that enabled him to see the moons of Jupiter and the craters on our Moon.

10 Cartography The invention of printing made maps much more available
Cartographers (mapmakers), used measurements and calculations to create more accurate maps. Gerardus Mercator of Flanders developed a cylindrical projection that is still widely used today A medieval depiction of the Ecumene (1482, Johannes Schnitzer, engraver), constructed after the coordinates in Ptolemy's Geography and using his second map projection.

11 History History was one subject that received extra attention
Renaissance scholar named Petrarch wrote about the importance of history: “What can be said in defense of men of education who ought not to be ignorant of antiquity (ancient times) and yet are plunged in darkness and delusion?” Petrarch’s ideas would emphasize the importance of history in education.

12 Did the Renaissance really happen?
