Read the following and create an infographic on why you think piracy happens – use facts and figures to illustrate your answer The economics of ransom money In the past five years there have been a total of 137 reported hijackings, the majority of which were settled by ransom payments, sometimes of up to $10 million (£6.2m). It is partly because paying a ransom is normally safer than trying to rescue a ship’s crew by force. But it is also a question of shipping economics. The costs of running a large ship can easily be up to $50,000 (£31,200) a day in terms of fuel, maintenance, crew and so on. So a vessel that is detained even for 10 days has already run up a bill of $500,000, not to mention additional costs in terms of problems caused by late deliveries of cargo or goods that may perish if they are not brought into port promptly For example, the Sirius Star, a brand new crude oil tanker that was one of the first big prizes of the Somali piracy boom in The ship alone was estimated to be worth approximately $150 million, with its cargo of oil worth a further $100 million. Against that, the ransom of $3 million that was eventually paid to free the ship less than two months later does not seem such a huge sum. “Young people get attracted into this business because there is very high unemployment here, almost 100 per cent, with no factories or industry,” Mohamed Kalombi, Puntland’s then interior minister, told me. “But now they see the chance to make millions of dollars through crime. With their money, the pirates are buying weapons and even bribing the justice institutions so that they will not be caught Many Somali fishermen believe larger industrialised ships have taken their catch of fish. They also believe that illegal dumping of toxic waste has decreased the amount of fish that could be caught. down at Bossaso’s docks, local fishermen confirmed that piracy was a temptation. One told me that he earned just $5 a day if he was lucky enough to land a decent catch Challenge: go back to the HDI data on Somalia – are there any clues there about why people turn to piracy?
