helping people to understand every organism alive, from the smallest bacteria to any indigenous species

An attempt to understand, explain, integrate and describe the world of living things.

5 Biology is important to everyday life because it allows humans to better understand their bodies, their resources and potential threats in the environment.

6 Biology is at the heart of many social and economic issues
By studying biology, students learn to make more informed decisions about their own health and about significant biological issues such as genetically modified crops, the use of antibiotics

7 Why Study Biology? Biology helps us understand the big picture
The study of biology connects us to the world we are living in and reminds us of our interconnectedness with all other life forms Learning in biology opens up career opportunities

8 What type of student might Biology suit?
Students who enjoyed science in the Junior Certificate. The course is a continuation of what was studied at Junior Cycle but in more detail

10 Biology Course Unit 1 – the study of life Divided into 3 sections
including Ecology, Food and Characteristics of Life

11 Unit 2 – The Cell Including Genetics, Cell Metabolism and Enzymes

12 Unit 3 – The Organism Microbiology, Plant Structure and Human Biology

13 22 Mandatory Experiments
Tested in the written exam

14 Exam Structure 3 hour written exam
Section A - Six short questions (answer five) Section B - Three questions on practical activities (answer two) Section C - Six long questions (answer four)

15 Comments A considerable amount of learning and study is necessary to do well in this subject, it is an extremely long course and my advice would be to chat to someone in 6th year or who has completed the course.
