1 Warm-Up Why do you think people move from one place to another or from one country to another country? Today I am learning about the reasons for establishing a colony in Georgia so that I am able to explain why my state was founded because if it were not for the English we would not be here today.

2 Founding of Georgia 1) History: Sir Robert Montgomery first came up with idea for a colony in Georgia (1717) called “Margravate of Azilla” 2) James Oglethorpe and John Percival asked King George II for a new colony. King grants charter, and they name the new colony Georgia (1732). Charter has three purposes: A) Charity B) Economics C) Defense D) Religion * (for those Protestants persecuted throughout Europe) 3) New colony is for debtors and other unfortunate poor. 4) When the new settlers left for the new colony, these new settlers included farmers, carpenters, tailors, bakers, merchants, and other trades.

3 Trustee Colony James Oglethorpe, John Percival and 19 others named trustees under charter. Oglethorpe wanted Georgia to be model society, based on strict rules on land and work, and carefully selected colonists. Three main complaints of colonists: A) restrictions on land ownership and inheritance B) ban on slavery C) prohibitions on rum and other hard liquors 4) Four main groups barred from the colony: A) Catholics (“papists”) B) blacks C) liquor dealers D) lawyers

4 Trustee Colony (con’t)
5) Boundaries – Northern Savannah River Southern Altamaha River (1736 moves to St. John’s River) Eastern Atlantic Ocean Western Pacific Ocean 6) Chief Tomochichi of the Yamacraw Indians allowed Oglethorpe and the colonists to settle on Yamacraw Bluff, which we know today as Savannah. 7) John Musgrove was Oglethorpe’s first translator, but his wife Mary would be Oglethorpe principle translator. 8) German Protestants from Salzburg, Austria were allowed to settle in Georgia at New Ebenezer.

5 Trustee Colony (con’t)
9) War with Spain A) 1740 invasion on Florida -took 2 towns and built fortifications to take St. Augustine B) St. Augustine – held city under siege for 5 weeks; sickness took hold in British ranks and withdrew to St. Simons Island C) Battle of Bloody Marsh – Spain tried to attack Ft. Fredericka, but encountered Oglethorpe’s troops just south of fort (Bloody Marsh) 10) John and Charles Wesley came to Georgia and established the first Sunday school in America and were later founders of the Methodist Church. 11) Evangelist George Whitfield established the Bethesda Orphans Home in Ebenezer.

6 Summary Writing – Which individual or group had the most impact to either make the colony a success or a failure? Why? Today I am learning about the reasons for establishing a colony in Georgia so that I am able to explain why my state was founded because if it were not for the English we would not be here today.
