1 Endothelial Progenitor Cells are Mobilized After Cardiac Surgery
Neil Roberts, MRCS, Qingzhong Xiao, MD, Graeme Weir, MRCS, Qingbo Xu, PhD, Marjan Jahangiri, FRCS  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 83, Issue 2, Pages (February 2007) DOI: /j.athoracsur Copyright © 2007 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

2 Fig 1 (A) Representative picture of three endothelial progenitor cell-colony forming units (EPC-CFU) from a postoperative patient. The central core of rounded cells is clearly seen with spindle-shaped cells emanating from the periphery. (B) Fluorescent microscopy of an EPC-CFU stained with low-density lipoprotein (DiI-LDL) (red) and lectin (green). The cells around the periphery of the colony are seen to stain duel positive (yellow) confirming endothelial phenotype. 3 Fig 2 Endothelial progenitor cell-colony forming units (EPC-CFU) in different surgical groups. All elective patients demonstrated a significant EPC rise compared with preoperative values (*), p = 0.001, p = 0.006, p = 0.05, respectively. Non-coronary artery bypass grafting (non-CABG) patients and urgent patients had significantly higher preoperative EPC-CFU levels than the elective CABG patients (†), p = 0.03 and p = 0.001, respectively. (Light gray columns = preoperative; dark gray columns = day 1; black columns = day 5.) 4 Fig 3 (A) The VEGF levels did not increase significantly on day 1 after surgery but increased by day 5 (*). (B) The G-CSF levels increased significantly on day 1 after surgery in all patient groups (*) and had returned to preoperative levels by day 5. (C) The SDF-1α levels reduced systemically in all patient groups on day 1 (*). (D) The MMP-9 levels increased on day 1 in the elective patients (*) but not in the urgent group. (Light gray columns = preoperative; dark gray columns = day 1; black columns = day 5; CABG = coronary artery bypass grafting; G-CSF = granulocyte colony-stimulating factor; MMP = matrix metalloproteinase; SDF = stromal-cell derived factor; VEGF = vascular endothelial growth factor.)
