1 Reversible addition at a carbonyl group
Reversible addition at a carbonyl group (A) If X and Y are not good leaving groups but the nucleophile is a good leaving group, then the reaction may reverse, as seen in the acid-catalysed reaction of a ketone with an alcohol. This reaction also occurs with aldehydes and the tetrahedral product is called a hemiacetal. (B) Formation of hemiacetal occurs during the cyclization of glucose. Amanda L. Jonsson et al.
