1 Rail transport statistics developments: user’s perspective
Hugo Poelman DG Regional Policy – C3 – REGIOGIS 23 March 2010

2 REGIO-GIS Analysis and Transport data
Analysis of the EU regions (NUTS framework) Transport infrastructure and accessibility issues related to cohesion and competitiveness Focus on regional data and indicators Spatial analysis tools to link point / grid / network based data to regions

3 Short-distance flights
Origin/destination data from air transport statistics Used in combination with airport location and connection length

4 High-speed trains Need for comparable data of high-speed network
Focus on links between cities is appropriate Number of passengers and passenger-kilometers Number of trains and train-kilometers Average travel time Best travel time

5 High-speed network Network extent and categorisation should be carefully defined

6 Segments definition for data collection
Segments (e.g. from city to city) should be georeferenced Minimum: from/to coordinates Preferably: segment geometry Segments’ definition should be compatible with the segments defined for Annex G data

7 Analysis of Annex G network related data
Schematically georeferenced data, using the coordinates files provided by the Member States Some issues with definition and location of the segments

8 Analysis of Annex G network related data: draft results

9 Analysis of Annex G network related data
Promising source for further analysis, also at regional / city level Segments definition may need some revisions/refinements Georeferencing of the segments may be improved
