GO WILD – go outside! MA106 Good to Be ME a time to reflect What do you think this picture shows? Today we are going to start with a song. Do join in if you know it. sesame street go outside song Ask the children to make a mental note of each of the activities they see the children doing during the song (apart from singing). © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

2 What were the children doing?
MA106 Good to Be ME Did you spot any of these activities? (If you did not have access to the song, invite the children to tell you what they might be doing in their playground.) Dance Hoop hopscotch (bird watch) clapping game bikes scooters In these 4 assemblies we are going to be thinking about why we need to go outside every day and learning why it is good for all of us, including teachers! My first question is not addressed to the children in this hall but to the grown ups. What was your favourite place to play when you were a child? (Scribe some of these places.) Again a question for the adults in the hall, What was your favourite activity when you were a primary school aged child? © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

3 Your Homework = Ask an Adult!
Where was your favourite place to play when you were a child? What was your favourite activity when you were a child? MA106 Good to Be ME Now back to the children in this hall. I am going to ask you to do a piece of homework for tomorrow’s assembly! Yes, I know it is unusual but it is VERY easy. (Check that the children know a variety of adults of whom they can ask these 2 questions.) (Tell the children that you will be asking them for their answers in the next assembly. Also warn adults in school that they might get asked these questions!) (refer back to the scribed list from slide 2) Does anyone notice anything about this list? (Ask the adults if necessary.) (Hopefully the majority of items on the list will be outdoor ones. If not you may need to improvise here!) © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

4 Who likes going out into the countryside or parks?
MA106 Good to Be ME Who likes going out into the countryside? Why? Who likes going to the park? Why? (If your school is near the sea or near farms or a zoo, do include these too.) © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

5 What can you do in parks or in the countryside?
MA106 Good to Be ME What can you do in parks or in the countryside? Scribe the children’s ideas. (The children can use the images for a prompt or two. Inviting the youngest children first is a good idea for this sort of question.) So why do I hear your parents, and some of you, say that you just watch tv or play on the ipad/tablet when you are not at school? Being active is a bit like choosing a healthy diet, you need a mix of different things. Eating just vegetables and fruit makes it difficult to have a balanced diet. Similarly just having screen time is not good to having a healthy body and healthy mind. We, adults included, all need time away from screens. © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

Life in Balance MA106 Good to Be ME For every hour of screen time you do the same amount outside!! A balance. BUT This is not just for children. It is for adults too. Sometimes YOU may need to remind the adults around you! So your role is to get your mum and dad to pledge that for every hour of screen time they use at home, they pledge an hour of outdoor or “wild time” – preferably with you!! But tell them about this AFTER you have asked your homework questions! [We will be telling your parents about this project – (in the newsletter, via , At a meeting etc) ] © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

WILD TIME Wild Time is what we are going to call time spent outside. In this case it is free time to be spontaneous, for exploring, playing, imagining and creating. There are no sockets outside and you will not need batteries. All you need to do is promise that you will have FUN! MA106 Good to Be ME As part of our Go Wild assemblies we need to be clear what we are talking about. Who thinks they can explain what I mean by “Wild Time” in our Go Wild theme? (read through and discuss the sentences on the slide.) (Check understanding of “spontaneous”. ) (Explore ideas about exploring, imagining and creating and scribe these if you having time.) © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017

What could we do in school to help everyone who comes here or works here have some more WILD TIME? MA106 Good to Be ME In the next 3 assemblies we will be thinking about what we can do in our school to make sure we all have some more Wild Time. (This is where you can add an outline of things you school will be doing over next few assemblies, in class, at break times, working with after school groups etc. OR ask the children to think about what they think the school could do and scribe their ideas. Prioritise one or two of these and invite a working party to start working on these – or use the School council to lead on this. © Mirror Assemblies - CB August 2017
