1 Nuclear Data Research at LANSCE with Possible Relevance to IFMIF
LA-UR Nuclear Data Research at LANSCE with Possible Relevance to IFMIF Robert C. Haight Los Alamos National Laboratory IAEA Meeting on Nuclear Data for Advanced Systems – Fusion October 31 – November 2, 2007

2 IFMIF has many needs for nuclear data
IFMIF neutrons Activation to 50 MeV Gas production to 50 MeV – e.g. no Molybdenum Neutron transport in sample environment Displacements -- e.g. file MT=444 IFMIF deuterons (and protons??) Probably lots of data needs: e.g. D+Cu, etc. Source reaction – It is what it is; do we need to know it better Imaging of source for beam steering and focusing

3 Nuclear data measurements at LANSCE are made with several instruments
FIGARO (n,xn+g) DANCE (n,g) GEANIE (n,xg) N,Z (n,charged particle) Fission LSDS Double Frisch-grid fission chamber; also standard fission ion chamber; new detector station for fission and (n,alpha)

4 Side-Coupled Linear Accelerator
Nuclear data experiments at LANSCE use neutrons at the Lujan Center, Target 2 and Target 4. Isotope Production Facility (construction) Proton Radiography Line B NRAD, Ultra-Cold Neutrons H+ Source H- Source Drift Tube Linear Accelerator Line D Area A (inactive) Side-Coupled Linear Accelerator Proton Lujan Center LSDS ER-1 Target 1 3 4 5 8 6 7 ER-2 9 10 11A/B 12 13 1 2 14 15 16 PSR Target 2 GEANIE 90R 120L DANCE 60R FIGARO Target 4 30R 90L 15R Fission; (n,alpha) 30L 15L N,Z

5 GEANIE (n,xg)

6 New GEANIE data significantly improve the 193Ir(n,n’)193mIr cross section database
LLNL/LANL

7 N,Z double-differential cross sections are studied with “standard” detector telescopes

8 We measure hydrogen and helium production cross sections for the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative
These data differentiate among evaluations Contact: Bob Haight

9 Helium production data is being measured for several materials for neutron energies up to 100 MeV

10 ENDF/B-VII has problems for helium production by neutrons on iron in the 7-13 MeV range

11 Hydrogen production also is being measured

12 FIGARO – Fast neutron-Induced GAmma-Ray Observer
FIGARO (n,xn+g) n X 20 liquid scintillator neutron detectors 2 gamma-ray detectors

13 Gamma-ray detectors near the sample trigger the event for study of neutron emission – needed for neutron transport 58,60Ni(n,n’) FIGARO (n,xn+g) 20 Neutron detectors En from time of flight ~ 1m “Double time-of-flight“ experiment Neutron emission in coincidence with gamma rays n x sample 22 m from WNR source Neutron emission contingent on one specific g-transition

14 Recapitulate: IFMIF has many needs for nuclear data
IFMIF neutrons Activation to 50 MeV – GEANIE relevance Gas production to 50 MeV – (n,z) – ENDF file incomplete Neutron transport in sample environment - FIGARO Displacements -- e.g. file MT=444 IFMIF deuterons (and protons??) Probably lots of data needs: e.g. D+Cu, etc. Source reaction – It is what it is; do we need to know it better Imaging of source for beam steering and focusing
