2 I. The New Deal Ends By 1937, economic improvement convinces many Depression is ending. Congress wants to cut back on programs; by 1939, New Deal is over.

3 II. Supporters and Critics of New Deal
Conservatives think FDR made federal government too large. Liberals think FDR did not do enough to socialize economy and end inequalities. Supporters believe FDR did help country recover from economic difficulties.

4 III. Expanding Government’s Role in the Economy
FDR expands power of federal government and President (Executive Branch). New Deal does not end Depression; does reduce suffering, give hope. Federal government goes deeply in debt to create jobs, give aid. WWII will put an end to the Depression.

5 IV. New Deal’s Long-Term Effects
National Labor Relations Board mediates labor disputes. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures bank accounts up to $100,000. Securities and Exchange Commission monitors the stock market. Social Security provides assistance to eligible citizens.
