1 MSJC Fall 2009 BSI Supplemental Instruction (SI)
MSJC SI Coordinator: Janice Levasseur, M.S. MVC Math Center Coordinator Instructor of Mathematics

2 SI Elements: Course Selection SI (student) Leader SI (review) Sessions
historically difficult courses funding SI (student) Leader passed course with an ‘A’ paid for attending all classes does not re-lecture leads/facilitates discussion shares study strategies viewed as a peer SI (review) Sessions ‘ two’ one hour sessions per wk planned around students group study/participation Participation attended at least one SI session attendance is voluntary SI models the successful student habit (group study) by putting into place the study group and then ensures its productiveness by providing an SIL

5 SI Participants attended on average 7.6 sessions
The mean # of students per session was 4.4 A SI session requires an estimated 3 students to be cost effective. 7.6 5 Source: MSJC SI Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext /31/10 5

6 District Benefits Increased course grades 2.34 SI vs. 1.64 non-SI
Decreased attrition rates 14.4% SI vs. 27.5% non-SI Increased success rates 63.3% SI vs. 41.8% non-SI Looking at ARCC – C. Persistence Rate and E. Annual Successful Completion Rate Source: MSJC SI Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext /31/10

The mean final grade average of the SI participants 2.34 was 0.70 higher than the non-SI participants. Grade Point Average SI versus Non-SI group 8 Source: MSJC SI Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext /31/10 8

9 59% of all MVC SI participants attended 5 or more SI sessions.
43% of all SJC SI participants attended 5 or more SI sessions. 59% of all MVC SI participants attended 5 or more SI sessions. # of SI Sessions Attended Mean Final Grade Average The students who attend regularly benefit more from SI than those who only attend before exams. 9 Source: MSJC SI Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext /31/10 9

10 Key Findings and Next Steps
SI effective form of academic support for BSI classes 63.3% success rate for SI participants vs. 41.8% success rate for non-SI participants F09 realized the first successful outcome in Math 96 – will consider reinstating support if funding is available. Benefits for BSI SI participants incorporation of study skills building a connection to peers and college extra support during crucial time in education SI challenges: space – introduction of college hour helped but is not the cure availability of SI leaders – can’t set the SI schedule till they register SI Leaders  early registration? funding needed for SI Mentors – 35 sections of SI (12 BSI supported) in Sp 10 semester trained & experienced help with SI Leader observations) Source: MSJC SI Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext /31/10 10

14 MVC Success Rates F’07 thru F’09
SI supported sections F’07 – F’09 No SI Non-SI SI Math 50 55.2% N = 1463 40.7% N = 91 79.2% N = 48 Math 51 61.7% N = 1643 50.8% N = 59 79.1% N = 86 Math 90 49.0% N = 3005 35.3% N = 139 72.4% N = 123 Math 96* 53.7% N = 3449 50% N = 30 52.8% N = 72 The “No-SI” group are the classes in which SI was not attached. “Non-SI” refers to the students who are in a SI supported class that do not participate in the SI program. The “SI” group are the students who participate in SI. SI participants had the highest success rates, followed by the success rates when SI was not present in class, and lastly the success rates for those who elected to not participate in SI. * Math 96 has consistently produced up-side-down results at MVC (support was cut after the F’09 semester.)
