2 Americans Pull Together
Tenant groups formed to protest rent increases and evictions. People agreed t keep bids low when foreclosed farms were auctioned. Buyers then returned farms to their original owners.

3 Seeking Political Solutions
No widespread calls for radical political change. U.S. citizens trusted the democratic process to handle the problems. Communist and socialists candidates did pick up votes in election of 1932. High point of cooperation among different groups.

4 Depression Humor People fought despair by laughing at it.
“Hoovervilles”, “Hoover Blankets”(Newspaper blankets), “Hoover Flags” (pockets turned out) Babe Ruth criticized for requesting $80,000 salary, (Higher than Hoover’s) Ruth commented, “I had a better year than he did.”

6 Signs of Change Great Depression ended with U.S. entry into WWII.

7 Prohibition is Repealed
Feb 1933 – Congress passed 21st Amendment repealing prohibition (14 years) Some Americans sorry, including President Hoover. Most glad – failed social experiment came to an end (Curb Gangsters) Control of alcohol returned to states (8 continued ban)

8 The Empire State Building
John J Raskob – developer of Empire State Building – begun in 1930, won race to build world’s tallest building (Art Deco Style) laborers worked daily Cost $41 million – ½ projected cost due to depression 102 stories, 1250 ft high, 67 elevators, 1000 ft a minute 1931 first Sunday, it opened 4000 visitors paid $1 for trip.

10 The End of an Era By 1933 – end of era clear
1931 Al Capone set to prison (tax evasion) 1935 Babe Ruth retired. 1932 Lindbergh’s infant son kidnapped/murdered. Jan 1933 Calvin Coolidge died.
