1 Aim: How do we explain equilibrants and vector resolution?

2 Vector Resolution Ax= Ay=
Any vector can be resolved into perpendicular components. Ax= Ay=

3 Meaning of the components
Ex: The horizontal component of a velocity vector describing the motion of an object represents how fast the object is moving horizontally. The vertical component of a velocity vector describing the motion of an object represents how fast the object is moving vertically.

4 Vector Resolution Ax= Acosϴ Ay=Asinϴ
Ax is the horizontal component of vector A Ay is the vertical component of vector A (Remember to use negative signs for vectors components which have the direction down and to the left)

5 Vector Resolution Problems
Find the horizontal and vertical components of the following vectors: (Sketch vectors) 1.15 m/s 30 degrees north of east Ax=13 m/s Ay=7.5 m/s 2. 40 m/s 45 degrees south of west Ax=-28.3 m/s Ay=-28.3 m/s N 70 degrees south of east Ax=63.3N Ay=-173.8N 4. 7 m 60 degrees north of east Ax=3.5m Ay=6.06 m N 15 degrees north of west Ax=-96.6 N Ay=25.9N

7 Rotating a Vector As we increase the angle that a vector makes with the horizontal from 0 degrees to 90 degrees, What happens to the magnitude of its horizontal component? It decreases What happens to the magnitude of its vertical component? It increases What happens to the magnitude of the vector itself? It remains the same
