2. This time, you are going to focus on potential themes that are present in the novel.
There are a number of themes that run throughout the novel. You will eventually be asked to write a thematic essay. To help us prepare for that, your job today is to discuss thematic topics in your group and mind map so that you can ultimately compose a thematic statement.
You must be making a claim, you must answer all questions and you must include textual evidence to support your claim. You will also be giving a brief explanation about how your evidence supports your claim.

In your group, pick two of the thematic topics to use for your mind map.
In the center you should write: Thematic topic
Main branches should be your topics
Off of your main branches, you should answer the following:
What does the author say about ______________? (This will be your claim)
How do you see this thematic topic developing over the course of the novel so far? Through characterization? Conflict? Point of view? Setting?
What evidence from the text can you use to support your claim(s)? Your evidence can be from chapters 1-14
How does your evidence support your claim?
