English – spelling and handwriting
All year groups will be taught spelling through an engaging scheme of work to ensure consistency and revision of previously taught spelling patterns across the whole school. Children taught a different focus and weekly spelling lists will be formulated from this focus. Pupils to learn ten weekly spellings to ensure success and enable deeper learning for all children. They must be able to apply taught spelling patterns within written work and use them in context rather than just memorise words for ‘a test’. The weekly spelling lists will incorporate 8 spelling focus words and 2 words taken from End Of Year Expectations (or) common errors identified in the children’s own writing. Each child will have their own spelling journal which will be used to record all of their spelling work. Children can access them at any point to support their own writing. All children will be taught a continuous cursive handwriting style and lessons will be weekly. It is important children join their handwriting as this is an national expectation at the end of KS2. High expectations remain for presentation. Georgia

Spelling Shed The Spelling Shed is brand new this academic year and will form part of your child’s weekly homework. It is a fun interactive way to help children to practise spelling via a simple game. The game gives four different degrees of support in the form of difficulty modes; Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme. Your child’s teacher will set lists of words that your child should practise and will monitor their progress. Your child will receive their login information in class and an information letter will be sent home shortly containing important information. Georgia - Spelling shed allows children to practise their weekly spellings in a fun and interactive way. It is dyslexia friendly and has three levels of game play to support pupils of all abilities through the spelling lists with various degrees of challenge. Teachers will create spelling lists according to weekly spelling patterns or alternatively, individual lists. The aim of this app/website is to motivate and support spelling learning at your child’s own pace.
