2 Timeline 1754- French & Indian War begins
1765- Stamp Act passes, enraging colonists 1770- Boston Massacre 1773- Boston Tea Party 1774- Intolerable Acts 1775- First shots fired at Lexington & Concord 1776- Common Sense published 1776- Declaration of Independence 1781- Cornwallis surrenders for Britain, ending the war 1783- Treaty of Paris signed, officially ending the war & recognizing the independence of the US

3 French & Indian War Between France & Great Britain
Over land in the colonies Britain won; French power in North America ended Treaty of Paris

4 Stamp Act Required stamps to be placed on most printed materials including newspapers, wills, mortgages, deeds, licenses, diplomas, dice, and playing cards First direct tax Britain had placed on the colonists Colonists rebelled & it hurt Britain’s economy Britain passed the Declaratory Act, which gave them the power to make laws for the colonies

5 Boston Massacre A British soldier was guarding a warehouse
Colonists were rioting over their dislike of British taxes & policies Colonists were throwing snowballs at the soldier Shot were fired, several people were killed

6 Boston Tea Party British ships arrived in Boston Harbor
150 intoxicated British soldiers dressed as Indians and dumped the tea into the harbor as thousands of people ashore cheered

7 Intolerable Acts aka Coercive Acts
Meant to punish Massachusetts and end colonial rebellion to British authority 1st- shut down Boston’s port until the city paid for the tea they destroyed 2nd- required all public officials to be appointed by governor rather than elected 3rd- allowed the governor to transfer trials of British soldiers & officials to England to protect them from American juries

8 First Continental Congress (a meeting)
Delegates from 12/13 colonies met to discuss persecution by England They responded with the Declaration of Rights and Grievances- expressed loyalty to the king but condemned the Coercive Acts Planned to hold a 2nd Continental Congress if the problem wasn’t resolved Where Patrick Henry stated his famous quote “________________”

12 After the War…How did things Change?
A republic was established New state constitutions, including a list of rights Voting rights expanded Freedom of religion Women’s rights expanded Differing opinions on slavery, emancipation, and manumission Loyalists fled- to places like Britain, British Caribbean Isles, and what is now known as parts of Canada A new culture- art & education
