2. Cold in the earth—and the deep snow piled above thee,
Far, far removed, cold in the dreary grave!
Have I forgot, my only Love, to love thee,
Severed at last by Time's all-severing wave?
Now, when alone, do my thoughts no longer hover
Over the mountains, on that northern shore,
Resting their wings where heath and fern-leaves cover
Thy noble heart forever, ever more?
Cold in the earth—and fifteen wild Decembers,
From those brown hills, have melted into spring:
Faithful, indeed, is the spirit that remembers
After such years of change and suffering!
Sweet Love of Youth, forgive, if i forgot thee,
While the World’s tide is bearing me along
Others desires and hopes beset me ,
Hopes which obscure, but cannot do thee wrong!
No later light has lightened up my heaven,
No second morn has ever shone for me;
All my life's bliss from thy dear life was given,
All my life's bliss is in the grave with thee.
But, when the days of golden dreams had perished,
And even Despair was powerless to destroy,
Then did I learn how existence could be cherished,
Strengthened, and fed without the aid of joy.
Then did I check the tears of useless passion—
Weaned my young soul from yearning after thine;
Sternly denied its burning wish to hasten
Down to that tomb already more than mine.
And, even yet, I dare not let it languish,
Dare not indulge in memory's rapturous pain;
Once drinking deep of that divinest anguish,
How could I seek the empty world again?

3. Poem Analysis
The poem opens up with her talking about her past lovers cold grave and all the time that has passed.
She starts remembering her youth and all the memories she had with him. She loved him more than she had ever loved anyone else.
She ask for forgiveness if she forgets him because the world is bringing on many new things in her life.
As the poem goes on she realizes that she can’t be sad forever and if she stops thinking of the times she once had with her lover she would be happier instead of always filled with sorrow.
She won’t indulge in memory’s pain too much because if she does she would be feeling the emptiness she felt without her lover.

4. Literary Elements
Imagery - “my thoughts no longer hover over the mountains” “

5. Themes
Memory and the Past-our minds don't work how we want it to; we can't help some things remember; but Emily says it is necessary for us to control how we feel about those memories
Suffering-suffering also takes time to get over, but Emily says we can choose not to let it consume us, and therefore ease the pain
Time-it is hard to hang on to the memory of someone while so much time is passing; there will always be distractions from grief that help us move on, but that's not always a bad thing
Love-the key in moving on through grief is to hang on to love without wanting to die from pain; to hold on to just enough of that love so we don't lose ourselves

6. Speaker's Attitude
The tone of the poem starts off dreary. The speaker is presented mourning and remembering someone who has died.
The tone then changes dramatically from dreary and mourning to optimistic. She learns to check those ‘tears of useless passion’ and strengthen herself “without the aid of joy.”
