3. Background… As we know, the Weimar government were in a weak position
They had experienced revolt in Berlin and had little support
After Hyperinflation, support for the Weimar government was at an all time low
Adolf Hitler was someone who wanted to take advantage of this weak position…

5. Hitler was now the leader of a small party called the German Workers’ Party
Their name changed to the NSDAP (or Nazis)
The group planned a putsch, or takeover, which he would lead
They would take over Munich in Bavaria first, followed by the rest of Germany

8. Events of the Putsch - November 1923
Hitler burst into a Beer hall where Von Kahr, head of Bavaria was speaking and put a gun to his head
He announced he was taking over Bavaria
Ludendorff allowed Von Kahr and his men to leave (they called police)
The next day Hitler and other Nazis marched through Munich and were met by the army
A violent street battle occurred between the SA and the army
– on this day video

10. Results of the Munich Putsch
16 Nazis were killed
3 policemen were killed
Hitler was arrested and tried – he used his trial to inform people of his radical political ideas
Ludendorff was allowed to go free
People began hearing about ‘Herr Hitler’ through his trial/ prison time
The Nazi vote increased to 1.9 m by 1924 – it made the Nazis more well known

11. Hitler was jailed for 5 years but served only (roughly) 7 months
He was allowed special treatment in jail – visitors, phone calls
It was in jail he wrote his memoirs Mein Kampf (my struggle) – this would later be used by the Nazis as propaganda
