1 How Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Differentiates Between Lower Body Ischemia Due to Arterial Occlusion Versus Venous Outflow Obstruction  Matthias Redlin, MD, Michael Huebler, MD, Wolfgang Boettcher, ECCP, Hermann Kuppe, MD, Roland Hetzer, MD, Helmut Habazettl, MD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 91, Issue 4, Pages (April 2011) DOI: /j.athoracsur Copyright © 2011 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

2 Fig 1 Changes in oxygenated (O2Hb) and deoxygenated (HHb) hemoglobin concentrations (top) and regional oxygen saturation (tissue oxygenation index [TOI]) and tissue hemoglobin concentration index (nTHI) (bottom) are given for the present case of venous congestion (left panel) and the previous case of aortic occlusion (right panel). In both cases, lower body tissue hypoxia was evident from the TOI, which was well below 40%. By analyzing the changes in the additional measurements, venous congestion could be differentiated from arterial occlusion.
