1 The iwill campaign is helping us all to think about taking part in Social Action ….

2 ‘Youth social action is young people taking practical action in the service of others to create positive change.’ Social Action is people doing something practical to help others that makes a change. Lets watch this video of some primary school children and teachers talking about social action.

3 Examples of social action include:
caring for someone in your community volunteering for a charity campaigning fundraising for a cause that is important to you..

4 Children at Lapage Primary School, Bradford engaged in Social Action
Children at Lapage Primary School, Bradford engaged in Social Action. Meeting and sharing stories with older people in our community, showing their headteacher the buns they have baked in cooking lessons to raise money for a local charity, meeting children from a different school, gardening with children from the school next door, placing a dove as a symbol of peace onto a display at the local Cathedral for Remembrance Sunday.

5 Starfish on a beach: A story about making a difference

6 Starfish Story Stage Directions- when you hear one of these words you do the action once! Beach – dust sand off hands Starfish – flick out fingers of both hands like stars Millions – look amazed Difference – snap fingers

7 And with that he walked on, picking up another starfish as he went.
An old man was walking along the beach one day, very early in the morning, when he saw a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Catching up with the young man he asked him what he was doing. ‘The starfish will die if they are still on the beach when the sun comes up-it will be too hot for them,” the young man said. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” replied the old man. “What good can you do? How can your little effort make any difference?” The young man looked at the little starfish in his hand then smiled and threw it safely into the waves. “Yes,” he said, “there are millions, and I can’t make a difference to all of them… but I can make a difference to this one.” And with that he walked on, picking up another starfish as he went. used with permission from © CPAS Dave and Lynn Hopwood in Telling Tales, CPAS

8 What is the message of this story?
Talk to a partner Small actions all matter – recycling, litter picking, visiting someone who is poorly, writing to an MP to ask them to do something for someone else.

9 If you join in you make a difference If I join in I make a difference

10 If we ALL join in we make a difference
Yesterday I said sorry when I was grumpy with my son because he hadn’t done as I’d asked him to and I said sorry to him. A couple of Year6 girls at the open day who felt shy about singing but agreed to and then sang out. Talk to your partner about a time when you made a difference-for someone.

11 If you join in you make a difference
If I join in it I make a difference. If we all join in we make a difference. Talk to your partner about a time when you made a difference in someone else’s life.

15 Some ideas to help us reflect about making a difference about in #iwill week
“I am only I, but I’m still someone.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  Just because I cannot do everything does not give me the right to do nothing.”   Motto from an Amish school in Pennsylvania “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta, 1910 – 1997

16 Aint No Mountain High Enough
If you need me call me no matter where you are, No matter how far; Just call my name; I'll be there in a hurry; You don't have to worry, 'Cause baby there ain't no mountain high enough, Ain't no valley low enough, Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you hey. Remember the day I set you free I told you you could always count on me From that day on, I made a vow, I'll be there when you want me, Some way, some how. We are thinking about the ideas in the song ‘Aint no mountain high enough’ If you need me call me, I’ll be there when you want me Aint no mountain high enough to keep me from getting to you . This song is about joining in by helping someone, sometimes its like climbing a high mountain to make the effort a difference.
