1 8/29/16 Lesson 21-2 Notes: What is nanotechnology?
Ms. Walsh Science 6

2 Lesson 21-2 :Vocabulary Key Terms *Know and Define them*
Nanotechnology- the very small scale technology that deals with materials and processes on a scale best measured in nanometers. Carbon nanotube the most recently discovered form of carbon with properties far different from those of diamonds and graphite.

3 Why is nanotechnology important to scientists?
Nanotechnology may allow scientists to manipulate molecules and atoms and build substances one atom at a time. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Two Challenges that must be met before nanotechnology is a success: A. Scientists have to find a way to move an atom , so it can be placed precisely. Scientist use robots because they know they are precise. Example: A Nano-sized robotic arm can pick and position each atom. B. Scientists need to find a way to pick and position billions and billions of atoms. Example: They will need a lot of robotic arms to put together Nano-sized parts into larger parts. Many robots will take these larger parts and put them into more larger parts.

4 How is nanotechnology applied to our lives?
Nanoshells promise a way to deliver agents to fight cancer. Nanopores can act like a sponge by absorbing mercury or lead from a polluted source. Nanocrystals give off specific colors of light. Researchers can use these results from the process to get information about a person’s susceptibility to lung cancer.

5 Carbon Nanotubes, Benefits, and Risks
Carbon nanotubes are the most promising of the nanotechnologies. The usage of nanotechnology offer great benefits along with potentially great risks. With Nanotechnology the scientists can discover if a molecule could harm or help the environment. Nanotechnology- generated materials may be harmful to the environment , or it could be used to invade a person’s privacy.
